Purple Loosestrife
Purple Loosestrife   Purple Loosestrife was first put on the noxious weed list in 1996. In Barnes County it was first discovered in Chautauqua Park in Valley City. In the park we started an insectaria for the control of purple loosestrife. Because the biocontrol agent is slow in getting started we are not depending on it to control this noxious weed on the Sheyenne River. During the summer of 2001 a control project was started for the control of purple loosestrife on the lower Sheyenne River System and all drains flowing into the river. A coalition of four counties: Ransom, Richland, Cass and Barnes was formed to not only control, but also map the river below Valley City to the Red River just north of Fargo. The objective of the project is to eliminate Purple Loosestrife on the lower Sheyenne. We call ourselves the Lower Sheyenne Purple Loosestrife on the lower Sheyenne.
